New destination!
Approaching by bike and barge, moving north from Berlin first along the River Oder and later the Peene River, we progress through beautiful countryside, delightful small towns, actual forests and have the occasional castle in view. We will pay a visit to one of them. At the end of this week-long adventure we’ll have reached the Baltic Sea and the town of Malchin and had an inviting look at an interesting portion of Germany as well as Poland.
Among the adventures of the trip is being on board the barge as it enters a ship lift and is lowered 125 feet, where we disembark and bicycle off for our castle visit before meeting up with the barge again. The pleasures of the barge are apparent, but this is also inviting country to bike in. The roads accommodate bicycles as easily as other transportation, the villages are accustomed to bicyclists, and both Germany and Poland are welcoming to visitors. In the pleasant Polish town of Szczecin you’ll be on your own for dinner and can make your choice among the local restaurants.
Following the River Oder our boat will take us into the Stettin Lagoon to spend a night on the island of Usedom. The scenery here is marked by chalk cliffs, the biking is splendid and takes us through pleasant villages along the way. A visit to a former East German museum gives a better sense of where we are and what’s gone on here.
When vacation time is limited but a change of scene vital, this one-week tour is a satisfying answer. Some tours may operate in the reverse direction.
